Year of the Fish is a magically realized world—by way of rotoscope animation—of a modern day Cinderella story set in New York Chinatown. Ye Xian (An Nguyen) illegally migrated to New York to earn money for her ailing father back in China. Ye Xian is expected to work as a massage parlor attendant to pay off her debt to Mrs. Su (Tsai Chin) for smuggling her into the U.S., but she refuses. The Madam forces Ye Xian to be her personal maid, cooking, laundering and shopping for her. Alone and humiliated, Ye Xian finds solace in a charming little fish, which is given to her by the mysterious Auntie Yaga (Randall Duk Kim) The ever-growing fish ultimately guides her to a struggling musician(Ken Leung), who just might be her prince charming.
