I'm at the Acorn Theatre tonight, at the invitation of actor B.D.Wong, who is making his New York directorial debut with a new musical by Michelle Elliott and Danny Larsen, called
The Yellow Wood, an official selection of the NY Musical Theatre Festival.
In
The Yellow Wood, Jason Tam plays a 17-year-old Korean American named Adam who has ADD, and decides to stop taking his Ritalin. Throughout the course of the musical, he explores his Korean heritage and embarks on a journey to self-acceptance. The cast also features Caissie Levy, Randy Blair, Yuka Takara, MaryAnn Hu , Paul Clausen, Elizabeth Lundberg, Sean Bradford, Jill Abramovitz, Dennis Moench, Scot Fedderly and Marnie Schulenburg.
Michelle and Danny, recipients of the 2006 Richard Rodgers Award and the Daryl Roth Award, are in the house tonight and have crafted a musical kaleidoscope. In a little less than 48 hours, B.D. will have transformed their story from the page to stage for the opening night performance.
For now, the actors are getting used to their new costumes as B.D. runs the second act. The Tony Award-winning actor is most definitely an actor's director. His actors make their individual adjustments from being in the rehearsal room to the stage, as he walks them through their moments, beats and choregraphy, amidst lights being hung.
The Yellow Wood has performances at the Acorn Theatre, 410 W. 42nd St., Wednesday, 9/19 @8pm, Saturday, 9/22 @ 4:30pm, Tuesday, 9/22 @ 4:30pm, Friday 9/28 @ 8pm, Saturday 9/29 @ 1pm and Monday, 10/1 @ 4:30pm. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through www.nymf.org or by calling 212-352-3101.
