Lloyd Suh's "American Hwangap" debuts at Ojai Playwrights Conference on August 12, 2007.

Lloyd Suh's "American Hwangap" will be presented in a staged reading during the Ojai Playwrights Conference at Zalk Theatre on the campus of Happy Valley School (a.k.a. Besant Hill School), 8585 Ojai Santa Paula Road (Highway 150), Ojai, CA on Sunday, August 12, 2007 at 1pm.

Directed by Diane Rodriguez, the all star cast features Kim Miyori ("St. Elsewhere"), Dana Lee ("Nancy Drew"), Samantha Quan ("Three Moons Over Milford"), Greg Watanabe ("Watch Over Me"), and Ramon de Ocampo ("Medium," "The West Wing"), with dramaturgy by Julia Cho, author of "Durango".

Written by Suh, "American Hwangap" is the story of Min Suk Chun, who left his family in West Texas 15 years ago to return to his native Korea. Now, upon the occasion of his 60th birthday, he returns to Texas where his family will accord him the traditional ceremony of Hwangap. He's coming home to a party, but will his family truly welcome him back after such a long absence? Love, family, bonding, alienation, passion and forgiveness are all ingredients in this comedy about a Korean American family.

Lloyd Suh is the author of "The Children of Vonderly" (NYFA Fellowship; forthcoming production from Ma-Yi Theater Company in fall 2007), "Masha No Home" (first produced at Ensemble Studio Theatre, West Coast premiere at East West Players), "The Garden Variety" (South Coast Rep commission), and shorter plays including "With a Hammer & A Nail" (EST/Thicker Than Water) and "Not All Korean Girls Can Fly" (EST/Marathon). "American Hwangap" was awarded a NYSCA Individual Artists grant and presented at the Lark (BareBones), McCarter Theatre Center IN-Festival, Stamford Center for the Arts and New York Stage & Film (Vassar Powerhouse Season). He is an alum of the Lark Playwrights Workshop, Dramatists Guild Fellowship program and ESTs Youngblood, and currently serves as Resident Artist for Second Generation and Co-Director of the Ma-Yi Writers Lab, the largest resident company of Asian American playwrights ever assembled.
