All Asian-American cast of Antigone at INTAR 53 in New York

Posted by Lia Chang on Monday, 09 August 2004.

Don't miss the National Asian-American Theatre Company (NAATCO) production of Antigone through August 14th at INTAR 53, 508 W. 53rd St. in New York.

The National Asian-American Theatre Company (NAATCO) presents Brendan Kennelly's translation of Sophocles' Antigone , directed by Jean Randich, through Aug. 14 at INTAR 53, 508 W. 53rd St.

Beginning at dawn, the morning after a brutal war has robbed Thebes of its King, Creon (Mia Katigbak) ascends the throne, establishing a new law designed to protect the State by making its claims supreme. The edict effects the opposite, triggering conflicts that make us human: friction between women and men, youth and age, individual and society, dead and living, gods and mortals. No one, not Antigone (Eunice Wong), nor Haemon, the King's son (Art Acua), nor anyone in Thebes, can make this King listen and spare him the harsh consequences.

This all Asian-American cast also features Alexis Camins, Cindy Cheung, Siho Ellsmore, Emi Fujinami Jones, Orville Mendoza, Nicky Paraiso, Fausto Pineda, James Shubert and Cruz Turcott. With original music by Robert Murphy, sets by Sue Rees, lights by Stephen Petrilli, costumes by Elly van Horne and sound design by Dave Morreale.

INTAR 53

The National Asian American Theatre Company was founded in 1989 by Richard Eng and Mia Katigbak to promote and support Asian American actors, directors, designers, and technicians through the performance of European and American classical and contemporary works. NAATCO performs this chosen repertory as written, with no forced Asian cultural associations.
