Ma-Yi's Savage Acts by Sung Rno, Han Ong, Kia Corthron and Jorge Cortiñas at the Ohio Theater in NYC

Don't miss the limited run of Savage Acts , a new play by Sung Rno, Han Ong, Kia Corthron and Jorge Cortias in NYC from Oct. 9-17. Presented by Ma-Yi Theater Company at the Ohio Theater, Savage Acts examines how the perceptions and representations of ethnicity have changed over the past 100 years.

Obie Award-winning Ma-Yi Theater Company , one of the leading troupes dedicated to portraying the Asian-American experience, presents the world premiere of Savage Acts , a new collaborative play by playwrights Sung Rno, Han Ong, Kia Corthron and Jorge Cortias, at the Ohio Theater .

In 1904, crowds of spectators visited "ethnic pavilions" at the St. Louis World's Fair, where tribes-people -- from Alaska, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines and elsewhere -- were put on display to showcase America's developing empire. In 2004, Ma-Yi commemorates the 100th anniversary of the fair by addressing the legacies of prejudice and ethnic representation engendered by that exhibition with Savage Acts .

Savage Acts is a quartet of multicultural voices and views-- African American, Filipino American, Korean American and Latin American. Kia Corthron's P.O.W.W. follows a Muslim prisoner in an American POW camp; Peripherama by Han Ong examines ethnic type-casting in entertainment; Sung Rno's tale of minorities that assume the slang and pop culture of other minority groups, and not their own are illustrated in Behind the Masq ; and in Look, a Latino , Jorge Ignacio Cortia writes about a son who steals from his mother's employer in an attempt to get her nice things of her own.

Jeanine Abrams, Jesse Bernstein, Ron Domingo, Piter Marek, Orlando Pabotoy, Sophia Skiles and Aaron Yoo are the versatile ensemble of actors who tackle this edgy evening of savage language and humor, under the direction of Ralph Pea. With sets by Sarah Lambert, lighting by Justin Townsend, sound by Fabian Obispo and costumes by Carol Bailey.
