Steve Mallorca's Slow Jam King screens at the Asian American International Film Festival in New York

Steve Mallorca's Slow Jam King screens at the Asian American International Film Festival in New York on July 18 at the Asia Society and on July 23 at the ImaginAsian Theater.

In Steve Mallorca's offbeat comedy, Slow Jam King Ron Domingo plays JoJo Enriquez, a wannabe gangsta-pimp, who thinks he hears his call to the streets and carjacks Vance, a mysterious traveling perfume salesman. JoJo's best friend Devaun, tries desperately to protect Vance from JoJo, and JoJo from the law. The motley crew embark on an escapist adventure deep into the heart of the Nashville country music in this coming of age tale.

For his first feature, Mallorca directed, wrote, produced, edited, and shot Slow Jam King on Digital Video in the brash, do-it-yourself tradition of Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi . Skewing genre lines and racial iconography, the film combines the quirky characterizations of Rushmore with the hip-hop sensibilities 90's hood movies, and the countrified outrageousness of Oh Brother Where Art Thou ? Mallorca incorporated his love of music into the soundtrack of the film, featuring a wide range-- from '70s falsetto ballads to country rock and hip-hop tunes written and produced by various artists, including an original score by P.I.C's Jeff Gray, and several tunes written and performed by Mallorca himself.

Slow Jam King has its world premiere in the Philippines at the Cinemanila International Film Festival on July 16, and its U.S. premiere at Asian Cinevision's 27th Asian American International Film Festival in New York on July 18. For all you serious film buffs out there, Asian Cinevision hosts Indie Power: First Feature on Video featuring Slow Jam King with an open dialogue between filmmaker and audience covering all the crazy stories from Slow Jam King's guerilla, no-budget shoot on Sunday, July 18 at 3pm at the Asia Society.
