Miss America Organizations

The past October, I [Nancy Bui] was given the honor to wear the Crown of Miss San Luis Obispo County for the year 2000. I am also a full time college student at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, majoring in Economics and Management Information Systems.

I am very proud to represent San Luis Obispo County in the pageant for Miss California, which was held in Fresno in June. The Miss California Pageant is an official preliminary to the Miss America pageant held annually in Atlantic City.

The Miss America competition was founded in 1921. Miss America Organization is a not-for-profit corporation that has maintained a tradition for many decades of empowering American women to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, talent and intelligence. Since 1945, the Miss America Organization has provided more than $100 million in educaitonal grants, making it the world's largest provider of scholarships exclusively for women in the world.

Miss California Organization is the Number #1 in the Nation in the amount of scholarship dollars awarded at the local level. The total last year in scholarships was $141,151. A small portion that each contestant raised is given back to the contestant. These funds allow the contestant to help with some of the costs involved in the pageant.

I am very proud to be able to represent San Luis Obispo County in the Miss California because not only do they offer great scholarship awards, but for the opportunities it has given me. After winning the title, I wrote and personally implemented a program that would allow me to travel to the San Luis Obispo schools and other organizations to speak about my program, Bear HUGS (Hope U Give Someone). I was a physically abused child, and I share my experiences and what I did to overcome them. I also ask these students and community constituents to be caring individuals and reach out to these children who are in need of emotional support and to donate bears to my program. These bears are distributed to local Police enforcement and emergency personnel to give to children that are in abusive situations.

I am very proud of my Miss San Luis Obispo title partially because I am the first Asian American to ever win this title, and because I have been given the opportunity to educate the public not only about my platform of Child Abuse, but also about my Asian American heritage. I love working with children and giving back to my community. Community involvement means so much to me, and as long as I'm able to breathe, I will be reaching out to my community.
