"Eve and the Fire Horse" director Julia Kwan conducts workshop at MoMA in New York.

Asian CineVision, Inc. (ACV) and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) present the award-winning EVE AND THE FIRE HORSE (2005) to conclude the winter/spring program of Asian Cinevisions, the monthly series of contemporary Asian and Asian American cinema. Writer/Director Julia Kwan will be in New York to present the screenings and also conduct a workshop with Women Make Movies (WMM). The workshop will be on May 17, while the exhibition will be on view at The Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 2 May 18-19, 2007.

EVE AND THE FIRE HORSE follows nine year-old Eve, who was born in the year of the Fire Horse, notorious among Chinese families for producing the most troublesome children. Growing up in the suburbs of 1970s Vancouver, Eve and her sister Karena, the children of immigrants, turn to religion and magic as they try to improve their family's situation. When Karena becomes fascinated with Christianity, crucifixes pop up next to the Buddha in the familys house. Caught between her sisters quest for premature sainthood and her own sense of right and wrong, Eve faces the challenges of childhood with fanciful humor and wide-eyed wonder.

EVE AND THE FIRE HORSE marks Ms Kwans feature film debut. It was nominated for five awards at the 2007 Genie Awards (Canadas equivalent of the Academy Awards), and Ms Kwan won the prestigious Claude Jutra Award for Best First Feature only the second woman and the first woman of color to do so. Ms Kwan also won the Emerging Director award at the 2006 Asian American International Film Festival in New York. In addition, the film scooped the Special Jury Award in World Competition at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

Julia lives in Vancouver, B.C, Canada, a second generation Chinese-Canadian. Before EVE, she produced, wrote and directed many award-winning shorts, including INFLAMED (1993), 10,000 DELUSIONS (1999) and THREE SISTERS ON MOON LAKE (2001).

In conjunction with the screenings, Ms Kwan will present a workshop organized by Women Make Movies (WMM). Ms. Kwan will share her experiences in a peer dialogue with director Georgia Lee (Red Doors) about making her debut feature, from refining the script, casting and working with actors, envisioning the story with your cinematographer, to crafting the final film in the edit room.

The Asian Cinevisions film series, together with ACVs annual New York Asian American International Film Festival, serve as a showcase to spotlight changing trends in Asian and Asian American cinemas, while also capturing the Asian global experience. The series at MoMA allows wider audiences a chance to discover themes occupying Asian directors today, reflects the growing importance of Asian and Asian American films in world cinema, and showcases the diversity and cultural richness of these films.
