StudioLA's Jim Ferguson interviews Jennifer Lopez Star of The Wedding Planner

Posted by AC Team on Tuesday, 12 August 2003.

Jim talks to the star of The Wedding Planner , Jennifer Lopez.

Jim: Jennifer, so good to see you!

Jennifer: Good to see you! How are you?

Jim: I'm fine, thank you. Congratulations. We go from "The Cell" to "The Wedding Planner."
Would you agree with me, a lot of people don't know about Jennifer Lopez, [that] she's a little bit more like Mary Fiore than the character she's playing?

Jennifer: It's true, I'm a little more relaxed and silly than people might imagine!

Jim: That's what you told me. So you could relate to Mary.

Jennifer: Absolutely.

Jim: There's so much going on in the film. Would you agree that one thing that I loved about it, I'm a fan of the old romantic comedies, that Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy - it's a throwback!

Jennifer: Yeah, a little bit.

Jim: With modern-day attitudes.

Jennifer: Absolutely, you know Adam really wanted, (Adam Shankman is the director) to bring back some of that old romance from those types of pictures into this. He did a really nice job especially with the park scenes and stuff like that. Actually some scenes that were cut out were really beautiful. Unfortunately, [they were] like dance scenes and stuff like that, that he had done. I wish that they would have made it in, because it would have made it really special.

Jim: That little scene with Tony Martin and Janet Lee in the park, it's wonderful stuff.

Jennifer: Yeah, it's so great.

Jim: I just jotted some notes down on what a wedding planner should be. And I'll tell you and your character and you comment.

Jennifer: Okay.

Jim: A wedding planner should be, should be able to give pep talks to brides.

Jennifer: Well, they have to be kinda psychiatrists I think for the whole family, you know. Just to keep everybody, kind of,more calm and at a low stress level.

Jim: Okay. [a wedding planner] has to be a director, like you are doing a movie almost.

Jennifer: It's almost like putting on a stage production. When you do a wedding. There's so much involved. There's set design, and there's places, there's music and bands, so there's kind of, in a way, a stage production. Absolutely.

Jim: In order to do those things too, [the wedding planner] has to be kind of a control freak.

Jennifer: She is definitely a control freak and needs everything in its place and is very meticulous and organized. And it helps her in her job.

Jim: Couple of my favorite scenes Jennifer, I'll comment. You're in an accident, involving Matthew McConaughey. You wake up in this little bed with these kids around you.

Jennifer: [They're] so cute, so sweet. You know what I mean, because they're poking me and playing with my feet and everything, I'm trying to do my thing, but it was a lot of fun. They were the sweetest kids.

Jim: [It was] a good scene. Another fun scene, but I hear one that you were a little concerned about, I was a little surprised because I know you dance and you do the tango with Matthew in the park.

Jennifer: Um, the tango. It wasn't so much that the dance in the park that was hard, but the tango with all of the dialogue that we had to do and all of the emotional beats of the scene, made it difficult. You know what I mean? Because the tango is a bit of an intricate dance, you know what I mean. And Matthew wasn't a dancer, but he did a great job.

Jim: He was more comfortable on the horse!

Jennifer: Yeah, he totally was. I was uncomfortable in either place, so there you go!

Jim: A thirty-second comment on your co-star Matthew McConaughey - a southern gentlemen?

Jennifer: Such a southern gentlemen. He's so charming and handsome, and down to earth. I mean he's just one of the good ones. You know, one of the best ones out there.

Jim: I've said that, too. I've interviewed him and I've said that about a million times. He's just a nice guy. Congratulations, again. And you'd make a wonderful wedding planner! Thank you. <</p>

Jennifer: Thank you!
